  • Bodyweight Training:
    Where to Begin

If you are like most people, the biggest question on your mind is where to begin your training, and the great thing about it is that this is the answer:

"Begin where you are, and build from there..."

Or, in other terms - stop wondering where to begin and Begin.

What do I mean? Well, obviously not everyone is at the same place in terms of their training so, if I said something like "do 10 squats a day"" - it may be either a walk in the park, or a tremendous challenge, depending on who you are.

Remember, we have Navy Seals on this list, as well as folks who haven't done a pushup since highs school gym class. Essentially both extremes -- and everything in between - so how can I make my advice relevant for everyone involved?

Again, begin where you are and build from there, and that means it's up to you...

If you are out of shape, get started and do something - something more than what you had been doing. If you can only do five pushups, do five pushups. If you can barely walk a mile - walk that mile.

It will get easier, I promise.

On the other hand, if you can do 30 pull-ups - do 30 pull-ups - if you can run a 6 minute mile, run a 6 minute mile - whatever it is you do, begin from there.

The nature of any physiological change ie gaining muscle, losing fat etc, is progressive exercise, doing a little more each time.

But first you have to get started.

Take an exercise like Hindu Squats, as outlined in Combat Conditioning Many people, even some folks you would think would be in tip-top shape, can only do a couple the first time they try. - I'm talking less than 10 reps, in some cases, before they can't get any more.

But the next time they train they get a few more, and a few more after that. Things will start to improve, dramatically in some cases by simply "doing it" on a regular basis.

I've heard cases of people who started out barely able to do a dozen squats now cranking out several hundred with ease, -- and the only way for you to get there is to begin...

On the right we have listed a few training courses etc which we feel would most benefit beginners -- but please do not think that they cannot be challenging even for advanced trainees, all of these choices are adaptable for trainees of any strength level. They can give you a great workout in only a few minutes a day and as your own pace.

I got starte with bodyweight training with Combat Conditioning which is why it is listed here. Another good choice, especially for women, is Eddie Baran's Bodysculpting Bodyweight Exercise program -- the movements are simple and easy to follow, and again, just a few minutes a day with any of these courses will make a tremendous difference.

As far as training videos go, our first choice when starting out would be Steve Maxwell's 300 Workout Program which provides a number of different workouts. And, of course, jump ropes a perfect choice for building cardiovascular shape.

All of our other courses, DVDs and equipment are also very good, and worthwhile choices as you grow stronger and in better shape.

In any case, you now know exactly what you have to do, and it's up to you...
