Welcome to Bodyweight Basics. My name is John Wood, and I have lifted weights my whole life.
That's me on the right with a 140 lb. dumbbell that I just lifted overhead.
I thought I knew it all when it came to strength training, but after a unique experience with a "God" and a Zen Master (Click Here to find out who they were), I realized that there was an incredibly valuable part of training that I had been overlooking for far too long. What I'm talking about is: training with nothing more than your own bodyweight. Sure, bodyweight exercises might seem simple. In fact, I had always thought that they were too simple to be of any use to me, but I learned that you have to do them right. Bodyweight exercises could be all that you ever need to do to build incredible strength. Before I go into how this is possible, there is something important that I have to tell you: |

The great thing about bodyweight training is that regardless of age, strength, or experience level, everyone can do it -
and everyone can benefit from it. It doesn't matter
if you are a top-level athlete looking to sharpen your edge, a 300 lb. couch potato who hasn't done a pushup since high school
or anybody in between. Bodyweight training can help you get results.
There is a very good chance that you have little time to train, but still want to keep in good shape. With bodyweight training, you can get in a great workout wherever you are - in 20 minutes or less! No more having to waste time going to the gym. Or maybe you are someone who has been through the "wars" of heavy weight lifting, and needs another alternative. You sure aren't alone, heavy weight lifting is a contributing factor in many sore backs, knees, and shoulders. In fact, many people have reported that they feel stronger than ever after dropping weights altogether in favor of bodyweight training. You can, however, still combine weights and bodyweight training very effectively. I know because I've done it...and that is something I will discuss frequently in my daily tips. I feel that even as little as 10 minutes of different bodyweight movements at the end of a workout will work wonders for your overall strength and flexibility; bodyweight movements can hit muscles you didn't even know you had. While it is true that you have to use weights to build a specific "kind" of strength, you can become incredibly strong with nothing more than your own bodyweight...and there are few athletes, even at the highest levels, who have mastered their own bodyweight. There are even plenty of folks who have abandoned all other kinds of training altogether and focus on nothing but bodyweight movements. Regardless of what situation you are in, there is a form of bodyweight training which can help you be the best you can be. |

Bodyweight training exercises go back thousands of years. They were often the
chosen training methods of warriors.
I'm talking about the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Indian Wrestlers, Shaolin Monks - you name it, they all used bodyweight exercises in their training...for the same reasons that every branch of the military still does today: #1. Bodyweight training can be done anywhere. #2. Bodyweight training works! |
|
| Of course, also keep in mind that bodyweight training has taken a number of different forms throughout the centuries: yoga, calisthenics, muscle control, rope climbing, breathing exercises, isometrics, gymnastics, hand balancing, and many more. You will find information on all of these topics in our Training Products Section. |
