"The Ultimate Functional Fitness Program for Super Strength and Conditioning - Without Weights"
Dear Friend,
"Pack your bags; you're going down to Florida to train with Furey and Karl Gotch." That's what my Dad said
the day I came home from College for the summer. I was 6' 4 and 260 pounds of solid muscle and at that point in my life, the biggest and
strongest I had ever been.
I was about to go into my Sophomore season as a Michigan football player and looking for
something to get an edge. Matt's book "Combat Conditioning" had had just been released a few months before.
I had flipped through it a few times and liked what I saw, but never really did a whole workout. I figured bodyweight
stuff might be good for warm-ups but not much else.
How wrong I was...
A few days later down in Tampa, Matt took me though a brief, but extremely intense session of
Hindu Squats, Hindu Pushups and then finally
bridging gymnastics. The workout itself lasted less than 45 minutes, but my muscles were already starting to get sore before we
even left the workout facility.
Here I was, a Big-10 football player at the top of my game, knocked down for the count by
nothing but "bodyweight exercises."
I had been training my whole life, but never felt like that after a workout before - and that was just the first day! The workouts
that happened over the next two days are for another day and another time, but all it took was that one for me to become a
believer.
I no longer felt that "bodyweight training" was strictly just for "gym class" any more - no sir!
I have been incorporating bodyweight exercises into my workouts ever since and have never felt better (or stronger.)
How It All Began:
It always starts out the same:
"Bodyweight training is good for warm-ups but if you want to get super strong, you better hit the weights..."
And then they actually go through a workout and find out just how "real" this kind of training can be.
I know because it happened to me, and it happened to thousands of people all over the world and way back when, it happened to Matt too.
See, back in 1985 Matt Furey won a NCAA Division II Wrestling National title at 167-pounds. A little over a decade later he
won a World Championship in the ancient Chinese grappling art of Shuai-Chiao. (Marking the first time that an American
won a gold medal in any world kung fu competition held in China.)
After all that, Matt thought he was in good shape...

Ancient Exercises Passed Down from the "God of Wrestling"
A few years after he won his Gold medal in China, Matt met
76 year old Karl Gotch, who was known as "The God of Wrestling" in Japan. Karl didn't lift weights, but he still had unbelievable
"combat" strength and never seemed to tire on the mat.
Karl began to train Matt using some of the unique bodyweight-only exercises that he had learned in his travels throughout Europe, Asia
and the Far East.
Many of these exercises were thousands of years old and combat athletes have been using them for centuries...
Now Karl was going to
pass them on to Matt. Even though Matt was a World-Class martial artist, it only took three simple bodyweight exercises to put him
down for the count - The Hindu Squat, Hindu Pushup and Wrestler's Bridge.
This taught him a very valuable lesson; something that Karl
had known for years:
"weight room" strength is entirely different from real "combat strength." Not long afterwards, Matt decided to give up weights for good
and has never looked back.
In 2000, Matt took many of the exercises he had learned from Karl Gotch and put them together
to create the "Combat Conditioning" program. This book sent shockwaves throughout the
strength world and introduced a new generation
to the awesome power of bodyweight training...
