Quick! - do you know the difference between joint mobility and flexibility?
They sound like the same thing but they aren't... the difference is that "flexibility" is simply improving the range of motion in your joints - joint mobility, however, is improving range of motion while also improving strength through a full range of motion at the same time. On paper the difference is subtle but in real life it can make all the difference in the world. You see, as you go through life, your body endures wear and tear. Your muscles and joints take a beating while playing sports, or simply staying active. For a while you may not notice it, or, more likely, choose to ignore it, but all that wear and tear starts to accumulate... until one day it takes you an hour to get out of bed in the morning while you're "much too young to feel this damn old" as the song goes. With a machine, you would simply swap out an old part for a new one and be back in business... With your body it's a different story but there ARE some things you can do - exercises you can use to regain that lost functionality. Steve Maxwell is 54 years old and he has "been through the wars"... cracked fingers from racing bike crashes, tweaked elbows from one-too-many arm bars during Jiu-Jitsu practice, a broken neck in the 70s... |

This unique series of exercises can be performed by anyone, although some adjustments may have to be made.
Either way, no matter who you are or what your experience level, don't let the simplicity fool you...
Joint mobility exercises should be a part of your training. And, as Steve mentions in the intro -
most people wait until after their body is already beaten up before trying to maintain it. But as the old
saying goes: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!"
Even just a few minutes per day of these exercises is enough to get the blood pumping and the "motor started" - highly recommended! Train hard, ![]() John Wood |
